CHAPTER 27

HAN

HAN WAITED UNTIL THEY WERE back in the cabin before he said, “So, what’s the real reason for this little detour? Obviously you’re working some angle for the Reb—” He stopped himself, not yet used to thinking the war was over, but then he floundered, unsure of what to call a government not yet properly formed.

Leia beamed at him, eyes alight with excitement. “Remember the briefing before we left? There’s a moon in the Lenguin system that has carnium. It was an Imperial target for mining, and with the way the Empire is covertly trying to undermine resources, it’s a prime place to visit and set up some strong alliances.”

Han blinked at her. “You just talked a star cruiser with hundreds of passengers into diverting its path so that you can play at being an ambassador?”

Leia’s face fell—first to disappointment, but then quickly twisting into anger. “First of all, you helped me talk Captain Dicto into this. And second, it’s not ‘playing’ at being an ambassador. I am an ambassador. I take that seriously.”

“You sure do.” Han breezed past her, flopping onto the neatly made bed, sending the perfectly arranged pillows bouncing onto the floor.

“I don’t see why you’re upset,” Leia said. She crossed her arms, staring down at Han’s supine body.

“Of course you don’t, Ambassador.” Han rolled his eyes.

“Then why don’t you tell me, General?”

Han didn’t like her tone—mostly because she’d never speak that way to any of the other generals. The ones she respected. He propped himself up on the bed with his elbows, the better to glare at her. “Listen, sweetheart, if this trip was a mission, you should have informed my secretary to add it to my schedule. I thought we were going on our honeymoon.”

“I’ll have Chewie adjust your agenda then,” Leia snapped.

Han threw himself back onto the bed, staring at the ceiling.

“It’s not that big of a deal!” Leia protested. “What do you even care about seeing the meteor storm at the aurora in Esseveya?”

“I don’t,” Han told the ceiling. “I care about the way you keep mixing business with pleasure.” He sat up. He wasn’t arguing with the ship; he was arguing with Leia. “First, you spend more time with the recording droids than you do with me. Fine, I know you told Mon you’d help out with that when she gave us the cruise. But then you care more about your image than the fact that someone wanted to kidnap you,” he said, counting up her misdemeanors on his fingers.

“Kelad is too incompetent to be a threat.”

“Not the point!” Han shouted. “And now you’ve shifted the course of the whole star cruiser just so you can take more time away to butter up some chancellor of a random moon—”

“Madurs has a prime minister.”

“—over mining rights on the off chance of snagging an alliance.”

“Why did you back me up, then?” Leia said. “If you were so against going to Madurs, why did you help me convince Captain Dicto that we should go there?”

Han shot to the edge of the bed and stood up, throwing his hands into the air.
